A Change of Heart for Statin Prescription?
For decades the medical profession has given almost unqualified support for the widespread use of statins to combat heart disease and stroke. At one stage senior doctors in heart disease research suggested that all men in the UK over 50 years old should take statins as a preventative strategy.
At last this is starting to change. In a recent survey in the medical journal Pulse, a majority of GPs do not support the NICE proposals to increase eligibility of millions more patients for statin treatment. Moreover, 75% of GPs would not prescribe statins for their families. Could this be because they are seeing an increasing number of their statin using patients developing damaging side effects, or is it the recent research linking statin use with increases in age related dementia?
